As part of the first stage of the tender for the supply of LTE equipment, Osnova Telecom purchased base stations from Alcatel-Lucent, and a network core from Cisco. The company is preparing to open a new stage of the tender next week.
About this portal ComNews told the General Director of Osnova Telecom, Mikhail Petrov. According to him, the operator has entered into a framework contract for the supply of 2 thousand base stations. Alcatel-Lucent is responsible for the radio, and Cisco is responsible for the core of the future network. The first network will be launched in Naberezhnye Chelny.
Earlier, representatives of Osnova Telecom announced that the company had chosen Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei as suppliers of the first batch of equipment (see ComNews digest dated March 21, 2013). Mikhail Petrov clarified to ComNews reporter that these were interim results of the tender, which consists of several stages.
"The company plans to hold a new stage of the tender for the supply of equipment in April," a company spokesman said yesterday. Osnova Telecom initially planned to build LTE networks in 20 cities with a population of 300 thousand to 500 thousand people, and later announced that it intends to reach 40 cities with mobile broadband access networks in LTE standard.
A Cisco spokesperson clarified to ComNews reporter that the products supplied will include elements of a packet core based on Cisco ASR5000 equipment and elements of a transport network based on Cisco ASR 9000, 903 and 901 equipment. The packet core will be located in three cities - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Samara, and the network will be distributed in all subjects of the Russian Federation.
"The project is of strategic importance, its value has not been disclosed," - said a Cisco representative. According to him, the contract for the supply of equipment has already been signed, and the delivery itself will occur approximately within two months. The project is planned to be implemented by the end of the summer.
A representative of Osnova Telecom added that 2,000 contracted base stations would be enough to build networks until mid-summer, in parallel, in the next stages of the tender, the operator will select vendors for further development.
The mobile operator Sky Link completed the modernization of the packet data serving node (PDSN) and the migration of data services traffic based on the Cisco ASR 5000 intelligent platform in the Voronezh, Vladimir and Krasnodar regions. MegaFon completed the modernization of the packet core of the communication network and the migration of traffic to the Cisco ASR5000 platform in the Central Region. The project was implemented by a joint team of MegaFon, Cisco, and CPM Ltd., which acted as a system integrator of the project.
"In 2010, MegaFon integrated more than 3 thousand kilometers of fiber-optic communication lines, mostly backbone ones, and significantly expanded network capacity in the Central Region. This is another step towards our company’s leadership in providing wired and wireless broadband Internet access services”, said Valentin Polozenko, technical director of the Central Branch of MegaFon OJSC.
The project of implementing Cisco equipment on the telecommunications network of the MegaFon Central Branch is the result of many years of work by our specialists in promoting Starent / Cisco solutions on the telecommunications market in Russia and other CIS countries. The capabilities and performance of the central branch packet network core will significantly increase the quality and number of data transmission services for MegaFon subscribers, - said the Vice-President of CPM Ltd, Andrey Borovkov.
CPM has provided, installed and configured the equipment of the combined wireless data network node for MegaFon. With the commissioning of this node, which has high performance and meets the most modern requirements, the total data transfer rate in the MegaFon-Center network has increased by 4 times.
The equipment of the American company Cisco, the world leader in the field of network technologies, was installed and out into operation in the auto room of the Central branch of MegaFon. Today, MegaFon is the only company in Russia that launched this equipment into commercial operation, which can be used without additional modernization in LTE networks.
